The Future of Multimedia in Education

Exciting new developments in VR are making this technology more accessible to educators. Google Glass was an early form of AR technology. This product combined a tiny screen and touchpad connected to glasses’ frames using wireless technology to transmit photos or videos to a mobile device.[76] Online content could also be viewed, making it a possibility for use in AR applications. Another technology that is in the development process is Oculus Rift, which is a gaming headset for playing VR games. VR is also being used in journalism in order to immerse people in real-life stories. Nonny de la Pena is a journalist and researcher who has created several of these VR projects, which she calls “full-body journalism.”[77] VR journalism allows participants to go places where usually only investigative reporters can go. VR allows participants to experience news stories in a very realistic way. Audio and video materials are of a very high quality, and users who don the headsets become emotionally caught up in the scenes unfolding before them. This technology is currently just as expensive as creating a full-fledged documentary film and requires teams of journalists, filmmakers, and computer technicians. In the future, with continued technological advances the library could be the place where community members come to experience immersive stories through VR and lifelike simulations.
